About Gary Adkison

From helping to establish the first successful conch mariculture program to contributing editor of Shark Diver magazine, Gary has a lot to talk about.

Gary has spent a lifetime in marine conservation focusing on shark behavior, migration, and the exploitation of this controversial animal. He is known best for his 17 years of work in the Bahamas, where he invented the “Chumsicle” which allows divers to safely study and photograph over 100 feeding sharks without the confines of a shark cage. He continues to work with the Bahamian government to develop protected underwater preserves throughout the Bahamas, so that never again will there be a repeat of the night when a long liner came in and killed 40 sharks.

Gary has made several expeditions to South Africa to dive, film, and observe Great White Sharks without the use of shark cages and is an investigator for the Global Shark Attack File.

Currently, Gary is working with a Swiss based shark research group and a team of scientists tracking annual bull shark migration from the Bahamas to Florida using $5000 state of the art satellite tracking tags. Next year, Gary will expand this satellite tracking program to the islands of Fiji, where he will be tagging mature bull and lemon sharks in an effort to discover migration patterns of these animals in the southern hemisphere.

Besides working on countless film projects and articles, Gary continues to lecture extensively in Europe and the United States promoting shark conservation.
